Job Description
A dentist is a healthcare professional responsible for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of oral and dental conditions. The role includes providing routine care such as dental examinations, cleanings, fillings, and extractions, as well as performing more advanced procedures including root canal treatment, implants, and cosmetic dentistry (e.g. veneers and teeth whitening).
Dentists also play an important role in patient education, pain management and anaesthesia, interpreting dental X-rays, leading the dental team, and managing clinical and administrative responsibilities within a dental practice. Strong clinical skills, precision, professionalism, and effective communication are essential, with career pathways ranging from general dental practice to specialised disciplines.
The Job Scope
- Examine teeth, gums, and oral tissues to diagnose dental conditions such as decay, periodontal disease, and infections.
- Perform restorative treatments such as fillings, crowns, bridges, and dentures.
- Conduct preventive and cosmetic procedures, including teeth cleaning, whitening, and sealants.
- Carry out tooth extractions and minor oral surgeries when necessary.
- Educate patients on oral hygiene, diet, and preventive care to maintain long-term dental health.
- Interpret dental X-rays and plan treatment accordingly.
- Maintain accurate patient records and treatment plans, and collaborate with dental hygienists and assistants.
Skills Required
Strong clinical and diagnostic skills with high accuracy and attention to detail in patient assessment and treatment.
Excellent manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for precise dental procedures.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills to explain treatments clearly, reassure anxious patients, and build trust.
Demonstrated problem-solving and critical thinking abilities in managing complex dental cases.
High levels of empathy, patience, and professionalism, ensuring ethical, patient-centred care.
Ability to work calmly under pressure while maintaining quality and safety standards.
Sound understanding of professional ethics and clinical governance.
Basic business and practice management awareness is an added advantage, particularly in private practice settings.
Academic Requirement
Degree in Dentistry

SPM / O-Level
Minimum 5 credits, including Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and English
Strong results in science subjects are highly recommended due to the competitive nature of dental programmes

Foundation / Pre-University / Diploma
Completion of Foundation in Science, A-Levels, STPM, IB, Matriculation, or equivalent
Minimum CGPA 3.00 – 3.50 (competitive programmes and universities may require higher)
Must include core subjects such as Biology and Chemistry

Degree / Bachelor’s
Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) or equivalent from an accredited institution.
Minimum CGPA 3.00 for progression and clinical competency requirements.
Programme includes extensive clinical training and supervised practice.

Certification (Mandatory / Recommended)
Registration with the Malaysian Dental Council (MDC) – mandatory to practise in Malaysia.
Completion of compulsory service / housemanship under the Ministry of Health (MOH)

Postgraduate qualifications or specialist training (e.g. Orthodontics, Oral Surgery, Periodontics)
Typically requires relevant clinical experience and a strong academic and professional record.
Salary Range

Fresh / Entry-Level Dentists
Fresh graduates typically earn around RM3,000–RM5,000 per month in early career stages.

With experience (3–7+ years), salaries may range RM6,000–RM12,000 per month.

Senior clinicians and specialists can earn RM10,000+, with some private practices or specialist fields exceeding RM15,000+.
